About

The Fridge Gallery is the Alberta College of Art and Design’s first design based gallery. We accept all works that encompass any of the five major design streams at ACAD: graphic design, advertising, illustration, photography, and character design. The Fridge Gallery showcases work from ACAD students, alumni, and faculty members.

The space is a 11′ x 33 1/2′ wall on the fifth floor of the college beside “The Nest.” The name “Fridge Gallery” is based on an inside joke between the students in design, where work that makes it to the walls of the school is like making it to your parents’ fridge.

Humble Beginnings

The gallery was founded in 2016 by two students: Darryl Sinclair (advertising major) and Kat Wawrykow (graphic design and illustration major). In 2016 the Fridge Gallery also rallied the help of Ryan Owen, a drawing major, to be our gallery technician and help designers set up and take down their shows.

Though they faced a lot of push-back from faculty, Darryl and Kat continued their mission to create a design space for students to show their work. With the support of student council and the department chair, they established the gallery and set up the necessary resources to be able to facilitate and showcase the works that were being done around the school.

In the past year, we have garnered a lot of excitement and support from students and staff alike. With the help of our department chair, we brought in a visiting artist to do a talk for students, and create a collaborative mural for the gallery space. We are also currently in conversations the Calgary community to create and host events for our creative communities.
